Historic Churches Visit Bladon

We went to Bladon Church - where Winston Churchill is buried, for a self guided visit; theres guides inside the Church, which were very helpful!

The Church does, of course, contain much Churchill related stuff! In particular there is a fairly modern window in his memory - it is fascinating and we spent some time looking at it against the guide.

The Grave is outside, of course, very prominently marked. We stood and paid homage - during his funeral (several of us remember watching the funeral on our black and white TV sets) a poem was read, and it was read again during our visit. Very moving, though none of us were alive during WW2.

At Bladon

Drop English earth on him beneath
do our sons; and their sons bequeath
his glories and our pride and grief
at Bladon.

For Lionheart that lies below
that feared not toil nor tears or foe.
Let the oak stand tho' tempests blow
at Bladon.

So Churchill sleeps, yet surely wakes
old warrior where the morning breaks
on sunlit uplands. But the heart aches
at Bladon.
